Independence Vs Interdependence

As human beings, we are gregarious social beings with high survival instincts, known as the most intelligent animal on earth. Throughout history, we have seen our evolvement from animal hunters, to agriculturists, to industrialists, to technocrats, and the count is on. One of the major difference that I have come to notice is that the evolvement has also been into our being more interdependent to now being more independent. Both exists and will exist always, but the impact changes.

What is independence and inter-dependence?

Independence: is the I of everything - I am capable, I am logical, I am an engineer, I am an artist. I, is the confidence that we have in ourselves; I, is the way we show up and I, is the way we are perceived as. This self confidence is very important to feel secured in this world. For some people, this self confidence emerges by being good at their work and for others, it beams while working with other people.

Interdependent: is the WE of everything. We, together will achieve higher goals. We, together will make complex things simpler. We, together will complement each other and become invincible. That is the power to interdependence, power of trust and belief working together in a team. As Aristotle has said "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts".

Interdependence is the highest level of Maturity as per the renowned author and speaker, Stephen Covey, in his book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People". It takes work and practice to move from Dependence to Independent. And it takes courage and compassion to move from Independence to Interdependence. I believe, "Education is the route to Independence and Experience is the route to interdependence"

It is important to be careful of the negative modes of the same - Independence may lead to Egoist and interdependence may lead to dependence. Stay tuned for many more!
